In 2007, Peter Newburg completed the
renovation of a turn-of-the-century home in Newnan, Georgia. The home was in
complete disrepair; Peter stripped the house down to its "bones" and rebuilt it
from the studs up. The home has up-to-code wiring, insulation, electrical,
plumbing, new roof and new siding. The original wavy paned windows were not able
to be salvaged, but this allowed custom-made energy-efficient insulated windows
to complete the energy-efficient theme.
Although Peter attempted to save the original
wood flooring, there was too much rotting; therefore, Peter re-worked the entire
first floor in beautiful oak in the diagonal style of the period. The home was
originally one story; however, a second floor was added in the spacious attic,
which added three additional bedrooms, a full bath and two gable windows. The
ornate window-paned front door and two 10-foot pocket doors between the dining
room and living room were saved. These doors were carefully stripped of layers of paint so as not to damage the intricate woodworking and recoated with an
oil-based high-gloss paint.
All five original fireplaces in the home were a fire
hazard; therefore, each one was restored from the inside out, including
re-tiling the fascia in the style of the period to keep its authenticity. The
home now has a state-of-the-art kitchen, complete with custom cabinets, double
ovens and a six-burner gas cook top. A modern deck was added to the back, and
the quaint front porch, complete with swing, was restored and repainted in the
colors of the period.
A modern master bath was carved out of a small room off
the master bedroom, complete with marble floors, shower and jetted tub. In
addition, new landscaping was installed around the decades old pecan tree in the front yard, and brick pavers replaced the cracked, uneven concrete
driveway/turn-around. If Peter can turn a run-down house into the beautiful home
you see here, imagine what he can do for your renovation project!
